Puerto Vallarta Deep Sea Fishing: What Will I Catch?

from:

If you intend to spend a vacation in Puerto Vallarta, deep sea fishing must be included on the ‘to do’ list. Depending upon the time of year you visit the Mexican coast for your excursion, you can expect to reel in different types of fish, all of which are available in different numbers throughout the year.

For example, if you spend the winter in Puerto Vallarta, deep sea fishing between December and February can bring in some interesting fish to fry. Mahi-mahi will be a prevalent catch during these months, since they thrive in cooler waters and will be quite active with the slight cooling of the ocean in the winter. Sailfish are excellent during the winter, as well as the fall months, and wahoo is actually best in January.

During the spring, as the waters warm a bit in Puerto Vallarta, deep sea fishing comes alive with different species. Jack Crevalle begins its best season in late February but continues to be excellent in March and April. Red snapper is at its best in April, with March and May rounding out good months. Amberjack thrives in May, as well, with April and June also being opportune times to search for these specimens. While summer tends to slack off in Puerto Vallarta, deep sea fishing can still yield excellent results in terms of tuna, which are heavy from June all the way through the fall in October. Grouper is also at its best in mid July, with June and August being good times to fish for grouper as well.

Fall is perhaps the most efficient time to go on a Puerto Vallarta deep sea fishing excursion. The ocean is teeming with fish at this time, some migrating for the winter and others fattening up to slumber. Black and blue marlin are in high season from September through November, with the blues carrying on through the better part of December. Look for sailfish, tuna, and wahoo as well in this season.

There are a few species that are considered “good” possibilities throughout most of the year but are not nearly as hot at those mentioned above. For example, in Puerto Vallarta, deep sea fishing locations are not teeming with pargo, rooster fish, or mackerel at any given time, but you may reel one in every now and again in your adventures.

If you are looking for something exciting and different to experience, visit Puerto Vallarta. Deep sea fishing here is among the best in the world, giving you plenty of opportunity to reel in the catch of a lifetime.
