Deep Sea Fishing California Style

from:

If you are looking for prime deep sea fishing, California offers the most coastline in the country with premium locations from which to sail and find a great variety of species. In fact, the waters of California are choke full of big fish of all kinds to wrestle with on a fine spring or summer day.

The southern part of the state is the best place to go deep sea fishing. California coastal cities in and around San Diego are great producers of whoppers, and as waters cool, these fish migrate further south to the Coronado Islands and further down to Baja California and Cabo San Lucas. When you plan an excursion to go deep sea fishing, California charters offer a variety of packages, ranging from a half-day mini trip between three and ten miles offshore to three week long vacation packages that venture out hundreds of miles.

What species can you expect to find when you go deep sea fishing? California waters hold an array of species, depending on how deep and how far away from shore you are searching. On your half-day trips, you’ll be targeting such species as mackerel, barracuda, and dorado. You’ll also find several types of bass, including white bass, sand bass, and calico bass. As you move further out, at least sixty miles from shore, you may still find some mackerel, but you’ll run into larger and more exotic species. This is where the real fun begins. You can wrestle in a bluefin, yellowfin, or big eye tuna, or you can fight with a yellowtail, skipjack, or albacore. If you are lucky, you might just land yourself a shark or a swordfish.

If you use a charter service, you won’t need to take any gear for deep sea fishing. California guides are rigged and ready to go with everything you need to catch fish. What you will need to carry with you is sunscreen and a hat to protect you from the sun, food and drink if you didn’t preorder or your service doesn’t provide any, a fishing license that can be bought at the marinas prior to setting sail, and a camera to document your wild ride.

If you have a tendency to get motion sickness, you may want to try a quick trip out in the bay for an hour or two before embarking on a longer trek for deep sea fishing. California shores can be a long way home when you get out to sea, and you don’t want to regret your decision when land is no longer in sight!
