AuSable River Salmon Fishing- An Angler’s Dream

from:

The AuSable River is located in the northeast part of the state, with its starting point in Crawford county near the town of Frederick Michigan, it winds gently through the state to its end at Lake Huron. The AuSable River, or Au Sable River as it is often known, literally means “with sand” in French, alluding to the deep, sandy bottom that makes AuSable River salmon fishing so popular and enjoyable. The river itself has many different portions, ranging from relatively fast water in narrow channels to wider, more gently flowing wide river channels and eddies and small lakes and tributaries.

The AuSable River salmon fishing is best in the area of the river closest to Lake Huron between the lake and Foote Dam, approximately 30 miles upriver from the lake. This part of the AuSable River is usually fished in the spring months of March through early May and in the fall between October and early November. Chinook and Atlantic salmon are the most frequently caught in the AuSable River salmon fishing season, with brown trout, steelhead, and smallmouth bass being other species that are often fished at the same time in other parts of the river.

The West Branch of the AuSable River salmon fishing area is best known for fly-fishing opportunities. The Adirondack Mountains provide an amazing background and the typically warm spring and fall weather makes fishing these waters very enjoyable. It is important to consider the type of equipment that you will need when fishing these waters, as there are several options. Typically for shore fishing a good set of chest waders is important and since the footing in the bottom of the river tends to be mostly rocks, non-slip or felt-soled waders are recommended over studded or rubberized soles to prevent slipping.

Depending on the type of fishing the angler is choosing, a rod of eight to nine feet is considered ideal. Since larger tree branches typically overhang the AuSable River salmon fishing areas, longer rods are often not practical. A four to six weight line and a seven to nine foot leader with one of any number of flies attached it really all the equipment that is needed.

Some areas of the AuSable River salmon fishing area are designated as no kill areas, most notably the area around the town of Wilmington. This no kill area is popular with people that are new to the area or those that just wish to fish for the day. The popularity of the AuSable River salmon fishing continues to grow, with many people enjoying the accessibility and beautiful scenery in the area.
